Scratch this entry. I've got a plan I think will satisfy everyone. I should know better than to publicize 4 AM angst.

My car will soon have new, awesome stereo and speakers, and I will still feel smart, handy and useful. It's just going to be a little time on the speakers.

Having installed more than a few car stereos myself, I have to say that it's infinitely better to let the professional do it. There's always some unexpected thing that doesn't quite go right when you do it yourself. Sometimes it's an adapter thing that doesn't fit right, or a mounting bracket that you don't have, or a weird screwdriver requirement, or some wanky fuse that you'd never have thought of. Maybe that's just a fault of mine, not having the infinitely vast knowledge of all things music-related that you possess, but I still have to recommend using the gift card and letting a specialist do it. Also, if the card doesn't cover the speakers, then you can at least ask the person who installs the stereo for pointers on installing speakers, and s/he might give you some insights that you hadn't thought of.

As to the whole "this is too big a gift and I don't want to indulge myself" thing, it's your freaking birthday. Everyone who put in for that stereo loves you, and your best recourse is to accept that love (and the corresponding gesture) fully. Not to mention that this is supposed to be your most awesome of years (being the age of your birthdate), so you really ought to get a fully-installed, completely awesome gift. You absolutely deserve it. A lot of who you are is musical, and the people who love you most wanted to enable that part of you in the best way possible.

To paraphrase some folks with a bit more lyrical skill than I: If you were the Grand Canyon you'd echo everything they said; but you're just you and they love you that way so know how to be loved that way.
